It was about 2 months ago that I watched an Instagram story for the first time. My best friend Lauren showed me how it worked.
“See where a rainbow-coloured-thingy appears around a person’s profile pic. That means they have a story.”
Last week the social media manager from my publishing house showed me how to make my own Instagram story.
“You can either do a picture or a video,” he said, patiently walking me through each step of the process.
Yes, I’m that type. A dinosaur.
“Oh!” Lauren squealed, when I told her I’m going to start doing Instagram stories. “I can’t wait. I’ve got so many ideas for you!”
“But I don’t want to be like Kim Kardashian or have duck lips.”
“What?”
“You know, I don’t want to do selfies, or post pictures of what I’m having for breakfast or pose with my boobs or ass hanging out.”
“You don’t have to do any of those things.”
I crossed my arms.
“There are so many things people would be interested in, other than your anatomy. What about how you write? You write lots of articles and poems. And you’re working on your next book. I find the process really interesting!”
It’s true. Whenever Lauren comes into my office, she sits at my desk, puts on my glasses, and pretend-types on my keyboard. When she does it, she looks at me, eyes dewy and says, “Leave me alone. I’m being creative.”
“Then there’s what you’re reading. You’ve got great taste in books … And also, you’ve got really beautiful hair. I suppose that is a part of your anatomy.”
I frowned, and crossed my arms tighter over my chest.
“But I’m taking pictures of your hair nonetheless.”
Lauren took a firm stance, and appointed herself the manager of my Instagram account.
So it looks like it’s going to be a) behind-the-scenes of my creative life, b) my book recommendations, c) my hair.
No disrespect to Lauren, but I think I can do better than that.
